These three names refer to different marble varieties quarried in the Carrara region of Italy, but they look quite different in person. Carrara marble has a soft white to light grey background with subtle, delicate grey veining. It is the most widely available Italian marble and tends to be more affordable. Calacatta has a brighter white background with bolder, more dramatic veining in gold or grey tones. It is less common than Carrara and typically more expensive. Statuario sits between the two in terms of drama -- a cleaner white ground than Carrara but with strong, defined veins. The best way to understand the difference between varieties is to see them side by side at our Houston stone yard. Photos do not do justice to how light moves through marble. A slab that looks grey-white in a photo can appear almost ivory in the right lighting. Come in and look at the actual stone before making a decision.

Honed marble has a matte finish. The surface is still smooth to the touch but does not reflect light. Etch marks are much less visible on honed stone because there is no sheen to disrupt. The tradeoff is that honed marble tends to absorb stains more readily, so sealing is especially important.
